Justin Woods
Background and Experience at AIMS
From long overnight shifts to full-time studies and wedding planning, Justin Woods is a testament to resilience, determination, and heart—both literally and figuratively. A lifelong New Jersey resident, Justin has been immersed in healthcare from an early age, with many family members working as technicians, nurse practitioners, and physicians. He entered the field young, starting work at an assisted living facility at age 17, and gradually moved his way up through hands-on roles in healthcare.
His journey to AIMS Education wasn’t his first step in allied health. Prior to enrolling in the Cardiovascular Technologist (CVT) program, Justin had already graduated from the EKG/Phlebotomy Technician program at AIMS and earned certifications in Phlebotomy and EKG. That led to his work as a telemetry technician. Encouraged by his mother—a seasoned OB/GYN sonographer—he chose to further his education and pursue cardiovascular technology, building on his previous training and field experience.
Reflecting on his time at AIMS, Justin doesn’t shy away from the challenges. While juggling a demanding 12-hour overnight job, school during the day, and planning a wedding, his determination was unwavering. “You could ask anyone who knew me, including my teachers, and they all say the same thing: ‘I don’t know how he did it,’” Justin shares. Support from his wife, mother, classmates, and CVT program director Kalpana Mahatpure kept him grounded and motivated. Eventually, he transitioned to per diem work, allowing him to focus more fully on his education and internship.
Internship & Hands-On Training
Justin completed his clinical internship at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) in Long Branch, NJ, where he quickly felt at home—especially being trained by fellow AIMS graduates. He credits his hands-on experience at MMC for helping solidify his knowledge and prepare for real-world practice. “Out of my entire two years spent in school, those were the fastest six months I have ever experienced,” Justin says.
That hard work paid off. With the encouragement of his mentors and instructors, he sat for and passed the Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) exam before even finishing his internship.
Success After Graduation
Today, Justin is a full-time Echocardiography Technician at Monmouth Medical Center—the very site where he completed his internship. He brings compassion, professionalism, and deep technical skill to every patient interaction. In fact, Justin recently received high praise from a patient who called the hospital directly to commend his kindness and professionalism. The patient described the service Justin provided as “outstanding,” noting it was the best care they had received at the facility.
That kind of recognition speaks volumes, not only about Justin’s expertise but also about the heart he brings to his work every day.
Looking Ahead
Justin’s goal is to continue growing in the echocardiography field, with plans to pursue his vascular certification next. His advice to future students: “Don’t give up, I know I didn’t. It may seem impossibly difficult at times, but don’t be afraid to ask for help, talk to classmates and even the teacher—and you’ll make it through.”
