Phlebotomy and EKG Technician Training

Hybrid / Distance Education Program

The EKG/Phlebotomy (EKG/PHL) program will prepare students for entry-level employment in the healthcare field. Graduates will be able to obtain employment as phlebotomy technicians, specimen processing technicians, or EKG technicians in hospitals, diagnostic labs, and physicians’ offices. The EKG/PHL training program is taught using a hybrid/blended learning environment.

Graduates will be capable of taking a patient's medical history, performing blood and specimen collections, preparing blood and specimen collections for testing, processing lab specimens, and maintaining lab supplies and equipment. They will also be able to perform 12-lead and 15-lead EKG tests, monitor EKG machines, and prepare EKG study reports. Graduates will demonstrate behaviors consistent with professional standards and will meet employer expectations for an entry-level position.

Hybrid Learning

The EKG/Phlebotomy Technician program is taught using a hybrid learning environment. All hybrid courses will utilize online and in-person instruction. Lectures may be offered on campus or remotely via a Learning Management System (LMS). Most laboratory classes and hands-on training will be held on campus.

Online classes will be taught synchronously. Synchronous instruction is real-time instruction that requires students to attend classes at scheduled times.

Employment Opportunities

Certified EKG technicians and phlebotomy technicians are primarily employed in hospitals, private clinics, pathology labs, mobile labs, nursing homes, and even research labs. Specimen processing technicians typically work in independent labs or hospitals. Similar to other careers in the healthcare field, job opportunities are expected to grow over the next decade.

Certification / Registry Exam Eligibility

EKG/Phlebotomy graduates will be eligible to take the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam and Certified EKG Technician (CET) exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), and the National Certified EKG Technician (NCET) exam offered by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Eligibility requirements for the CPT, CET, and NCET credentials are solely determined by NHA and NCCT, and are subject to change at any time. NHA and NCCT are independent organizations. AIMS does not guarantee certification/registry exam eligibility.

Program Length

The EKG/Phlebotomy Technician training program is a non-term program and will be taught using a block schedule. Students will enroll as a cohort and take one course at a time.

Minimum Admission Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Passing score on the Wonderlic Scholastic Level Exam
