MEDICAL BILLING AND CODING

Technical Standards

The prospective Medical Billing and Coding student must be able to:

• Sit at a desk for 80%-90% of worktime.
• Read text from printed material or a computer screen.
• Use a keyboard and type effectively for long periods of time.
• Perform basic mathematical computations.

The prospective Medical Billing & Coding student must:

• Possess the proper motor skills to use standard office equipment.
• Be competent using MS Office, particularly Word and Excel.
• Possess good interpersonal skills to interact with patients, family members, and medical staff.
• Possess detailed oriented skills.
• Be capable of using a phone for long periods of time.
• Possess analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Be courteous, polite, and professional.

Health Standards

The prospective Medical Billing & Coding student must:

• Consistently demonstrate emotional, mental, and physical health.
• Possess adequate hearing in order to communicate with patients, family members, and medical staff.
• Be able to handle stressful situations related to billing and insurance.
• Be emotionally capable of working with patients and performing all job tasks safely.

Communication Standards

The prospective Medical Billing & Coding student must demonstrate effective communication skills in order to:

• Communicate clearly in English with patients, family members, and medical staff.
• Elicit accurate information from patients, family members, and medical staff.
• Utilize professional medical terms when documenting a patient’s electronic health record.
